About the role
Cambridgeshire Archives is part of the Council’s Communities, Libraries and Skills Service and is dedicated to collecting, preserving and promoting the use of historical records of Cambridgeshire. This is a full-time, office-based role at Cambridgeshire Archives in Ely, working alongside two other Archive Assistants within a small, but busy team.

What will you be doing?
Based at Cambridgeshire Archives in Ely you will be working in our public searchroom, assisting customers with their research and producing documents from our strongrooms. You will be using a range of historical records to answer research enquiries on a wide range of topics and will provide a friendly and efficient reception service, greeting customers, issuing readers’ tickets and answering the phone.
You may also be called upon to help with the listing of records as required and with talks, displays and other outreach events promoting our service.
About you
Ideally, you will have experience of working in archives, local studies or records management or, failing that, a genuine interest in local or family history and the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the role, nature and care of archives.
This is a front-line, public-facing post so some experience of working with the public, or a passion for providing excellent customer care, is essential.
You will possess a minimum of 5 GCSE’s or equivalent, and good ICT skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills and a readiness to engage with customers are key to the role.
You should enjoy working within a small team, communicating effectively with colleagues and offering support where necessary.
This is a physically demanding role, involving the regular use of ladders and the handling and transportation of records of varying weights and dimensions.
