About the role

Are you looking for a position where you can make a real difference on climate change?

Cambridgeshire County Council declared a Climate and Environment Emergency in 2019 and in 2021 the council’s Joint Administration, put the environment, sustainability and the climate emergency at the centre of its plans.  

The Council has pledged to be Net Zero across the County by 2045 and to achieve a Net Zero Council by 2030.  As we strive to become more carbon literate as an organisation we are seeking an enthusiastic person to support us on our decarbonisation journey..

You'll be joining a solutions focused team that has a track record in delivering clean energy solutions and generating income for the Council. You will be part of a wider dedicated and focussed Net Zero programme team across the Council, undertaking activities and projects that contribute towards the Council's pathway to Net Zero.

This post is for an initial 2 year term with potential for extension.

What will you be doing?

This job will deliver the actions identified in the Council's Climate Change and Environment Strategy and Action Plan and help the Council achieve its ambitious carbon reduction and environmental targets. This will include a range of projects to improve the Council’s environmental performance, tackling the challenges of climate change mitigation, adaptation and conservation of natural capital.

The Climate Change Officer will need to work with colleagues across the Council to deliver a range of projects on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our buildings and fleet, to monitor and report on performance against environmental targets and to communicate climate change and environmental issues to internal and external stakeholders.

You will use your initiative to explore best practice nationally, linking with national groups and government to develop action with Cambridgeshire communities.

About you

You'll have a passion and enthusiasm for the environment and tackling the climate crisis.

Educated to degree level or equivalent in an environment-related subject, you'll have a good knowledge and understanding of a range of climate change and environmental sustainability issues.

Good communication skills, both oral and written, are also essential for this role, as the postholder will be required to present complex and sometimes technical information in appropriate forms for a wide range of internal and external audiences.
