Community Library Assistant

About the role

Linton Library is a vibrant, busy community library situated in the heart of the village. We are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic, and versatile person. You will have high standards of customer care and be able to work using your own initiative.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a friendly and welcoming library space for all customers and volunteers. Mainly working on your own you will be able to multi-task, be flexible and enjoy working under pressure. There may also be scope for working in other locations, so flexibility and adaptability is a must. IT skills are essential for this role and full training will be given on library specific systems and processes. The role involves a significant amount of standing, bending, carrying books and pushing heavy trollies.

You will:

  • be confident working on your own using your initiative.
  • have excellent communication and digital skills.
  • be able to work with volunteers.
  • be able to quickly master the varied aspects of library routines, including front line customer care, using the library management system, the self-service machines, handling cash, stock requests and stock circulation procedures.
  • demonstrate a mature and professional attitude. 
  • be able to work collaboratively with partners in the building.

This is a permanent 8.5 hours per week post. The salary is pro rata to reflect this.

What will you be doing?

This is primarily a customer facing role working in the library, dealing with enquiries, supporting customers to access online services and promoting the Library offer in the community. 

There are many opportunities to support and deliver Library events, including Rhyme times and Story times and although there is plenty of routine work, there are also many opportunities to be creative.  

Library experience is an advantage. However, we would love to hear from candidates who have demonstrated exceptional customer service skills in other contexts. Training will be given on specific library systems, but an ability to work with IT is essential.  

The successful candidate will be passionate about what public libraries can offer, and able to promote our services both within the library and in the wider community.
