About the role
We are looking for an experienced Design Services Manager to lead our in-house Design Team. Our wider Asset Management Design & Delivery team has a diverse portfolio of transport infrastructure projects. Your role will be critical to the development of our infrastructure and active travel that and will be vital to the future economic wellbeing of Cambridgeshire.

What will you be doing?
You will manage programme needs and ensure we follow Construction Design Management regulations. Your technical skills will be crucial for managing expectations, advancing design work, developing those who look to you for support and guidance, and improving processes to reach project goals.
Leading the team, you'll oversee diverse projects, including:
- Major Maintenance: Managing a high-volume, countywide portfolio of maintenance projects with a budget of approximately £9 million.
- Transport Strategy Aims and Section 106: Delivering countywide improvements, with schemes up to £500,000, focusing on public realm enhancements and active travel.
- Local Highway Improvements, 20mph, and Privately Funded Works: Overseeing local improvement projects, including traffic calming and speed limit changes, with budgets up to £50,000.
Your role will involve ensuring we use best design practices and maximise contract savings to achieve value for money. You will support the Head of Service by aligning service delivery with council objectives. This involves effective planning, engaging with stakeholders, and managing resources. Establishing a forward pipeline of work over multiple years will be key.
You will be expected to line manage and help develop a multi-skilled team of highway infrastructure designers, including technician apprentices. The existing team is well established and high performing, so previous experience in development and helping others reach their full potential is a must.
About you
You will have a degree in Civil Engineering, or related field, with significant experience in highway design and infrastructure projects.
Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of managing a team of industry experts, delivering design and construction projects is needed.
You’ll be working with our in-house project management team to design and deliver an integrated work programme, so collaboration, enthusiasm, and attention to detail are a must. As well as a focus on delivering value for money and getting it right first time for our communities.
