District Library Manager

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

About the role

Are you a creative, energetic and versatile person with a passion for libraries and a desire to help shape the future of a sector leading Library Service in Cambridgeshire? This could be the role for you.

Cambridgeshire Libraries, Archives and Culture are looking to recruit a District Library Manager (Cambridge City). The successful candidate will be a full member of the Library Leadership Team working directly with the Head of Libraries, Archives and Culture. You will oversee our flagship Central library as well as branches at Barnwell Road, Arbury Court, Milton Road, Rock Road, Cherry Hinton and our partnership with the City Council at the Clay Farm Centre. This is an area that would allow you to develop and stretch your skills and demands a highly motivated and talented individual.

Training and support will be provided to the successful candidate transitioning into the role and where appropriate and with the agreement of the new post holder we will offer a Mentor for guidance and support. While it is not essential to have prior experience of working in public libraries, you will have an understanding of how they fit into a community as well as an awareness of wider national strategies for the sector. We encourage candidates to highlight how they fit these requirements in their personal statement.

This is a permanent and full-time role (37 hour per week). Candidates must be able to travel within the county as required and work flexibly, with a requirement for some weekend and evening working.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 1st June at Cambridge Central Library

What will you be doing?

Cambridge is one of the fastest growing areas of the Country and the Library Service has unprecedented levels of growth. You will help deliver projects including  the exciting EverySpace project at Cambridge Central and the redevelopment of Cherry Hinton Library with the local community.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to negotiate, and be a strong advocate for the library and other community services.

In line with our Team Charter the post holder will adopt blended working (a mix of home and library based working) in line with the needs of the service.

The role has dual remit, geographic specific (Cambridge City) but also countywide as a member of the Library Leadership Team which is responsible for the operational delivery and strategic development of the library service. This role includes: team leading, staff management, and recruitment. You will contribute to the strategic leadership and development of libraries through an exciting period of transformation. Candidates therefore need to be able to develop new ways of working and target new projects, to understand the importance of working with partners and raise the profile of the Library Service to external stakeholders. You will be able to work successfully with external teams and groups, you will have the ability to handle different and competing priorities and some understanding and experience of budget management.

About you

You will need energy and drive, leadership qualities and a strong results focus to thrive in this role. You will manage, lead, inspire and motivate a team of dedicated staff and volunteers across the city.

Partnership working is central to our vision for service development. You will need the ability to build new partnerships with public and voluntary sector providers and there will be the opportunity to deliver grant-funded activities.

The role requires a creative thinker, someone who can seek out new opportunities for the service but also the ability to deliver and implement on the ground.
