About the role

Local government provides essential public services that are relied on by residents.  From social care and safeguarding to highways and planning, from libraries and housing to trading standards and public health – the range of roles we play, and the risks they bring, are wide ranging.

This role provides the strategic and specialist leadership of our shared Insurance service covering the Councils for Cambridgeshire, West Northamptonshire, Milton Keynes and North Northamptonshire, as well as several other local government partners. 

This is an exciting opportunity for an insurance professional to lead our shared service our ensuring the Councils are protected for insurable risks, value for money is achieved and that claims received are dealt with promptly and defended and minimised as appropriate,

Although the role is employed by Cambridgeshire County Council, the insurance team operates as an established and integrated joint unit which brings scale and resilience, as well as opportunities for continuous improvements across the partnership.   The roleholder will combine strong team leadership skills, with creativity and proactive planning to meet the objectives of all of the partner Councils. 

What will you be doing?

This role is the Councils’ lead professional specialising in insurance, promoting development and implementation of our insurance strategy, procurement and design of an appropriate insurance programme and overseeing the handling of the most complex/contentious claims.

The Insurance team is an ‘enabling service’ and ensuring quality customer service both to the public and internal departments will be key. You will line manage the functional leads within the team for underwriting, claims management and administration as well as supervising the relationships and liaison with insurers and brokers.  

You will advise on risk control activities across the business in all areas of insurance cover including material damage, business interruption, liability, motor, solar and engineering.

About you

To be successful in this post, you will be a strategic insurance professional, with the experience of having led an insurance function to deliver successful outcomes across a diverse portfolio.  You will be familiar with the insurance needs of public services and experienced working across a large and complex organisation.

Our benefits

For a successful candidate relocating into Cambridgeshire as part of a move to the County, this role attracts relocation reimbursement up to £6k.

For an exceptional and experienced appointee, a market factor supplement is available of £3k in addition to the base salary level shown above.
