A vacancy has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join the Highway Records Team at Cambridgeshire County Council. We have a strong can-do culture motivated by protecting the Highway Authority’s interests and achieving the best outcomes for our customers, residents and other stakeholders.
The Highway Records Team manages the legal record of the road network within Cambridgeshire as well as dealing with thousands of requests for highway-related information. Our role is to ensure that the Highways Maintenance Service knows what it must maintain, to respond to local search questions covering a range of different information, to support an exciting array of transport developments countywide and to provide guidance on issues related to highway law and related processes.
This is a fantastic opportunity to join a supportive and flexible team who are central to the Council’s response to demand in the housing market and supporting the delivery of key infrastructure projects by delivering accurate and timely information to internal and external stakeholders.

We have a busy portfolio dealing with a range of enquiries from the public, colleagues, partner authorities and other stakeholders. As a Highway Records Officer you’ll work in a stimulating environment to protect the highway network and public interests, while contributing to significant highway development projects. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing caseload of enquiries and requests for highway information from internal & external customers and providing responses within delivery timeframes - including providing responses to key strategic infrastructure projects when required,
- Undertaking in-depth highway boundary investigations using a variety of historic record sources and carrying out site visits where needed,
- Managing and maintaining the County Councils highway records and undertaking the delivery of specialist records management and data improvement projects,
- Managing the County Council’s Local Street Gazetteer, ensuring the data is up to date and accurate for use by external organisations.
About you
We are looking for a quick learner with excellent organizational skills and an appetite for professional development. A methodical and thorough approach is required to manage the Council’s highway records and street gazetteer. Experience and the ability to liaise knowledgeably with a range of stakeholders on complex issues and processes as well as a high standard of written and verbal communication is essential. You will be an adaptable team player with a supportive attitude and will demonstrate commitment to team working to ensure our continuous incoming queries are answered accurately and on time.
Strong map reading and interpretation skills are essential with experience of digital mapping desirable. Previous experience of working within a highway records, records management, conveyancing sector or experience in dealing with historical documents, surveying and relevant legislation is desirable. However full training is provided on the job.
Please note that although based at Huntingdon Highways Depot, this is a hybrid role offering a mix of office and home working. The post holder will be expected to travel around the county for site visits and customer and colleague meetings when required.
