Lived experience Co-ordinator - People Participation Lead

About the role

The post holder will work within the Public Mental Health Team at the local authority but will also report to and work with the Public Health consultant at CPFT.

The purpose of the role is to ensure that the views and experience of people with mental health conditions are at the centre of the work to develop and understand the mental health needs of the population. Ultimately the purpose of this role is to improve outcomes for service users and improve service user and carer experience through lived experience, insights and perspectives.

The post holder will need to reach out to those working within organisations, communities and groups who have specialist knowledge, understanding and contact with those at higher risk of mental health problems to ensure quality and diversity apply.

What will you be doing?

The role will require identifying work already carried out in this area and working with mental health advocates in the community to support the development of a whole system mental health needs assessment. Where there are gaps in understanding or lived experience, to work in partnership to gain the opinions, understand the needs and ensure that the voices of those with direct experience of mental health problems or illness are heard and included in the needs assessment work.

Main accountabilities:

1. To manage and co-ordinate a programme building on work carried out already in engagement and co-production work, ensuring inclusivity and diversity are taken into account to enable reach and awareness of inequalities.

2. To build on the network of Experts by Experience

3. Contribute to the writing of the mental health needs assessment and other reports as required in terms of co-production messages and recommendations.

4. Provide written summary reports and feedback that identifies the main themes from co-production sessions.

5. Support effective communications to all our stakeholders of participation and progress of work to date.

6. Demonstrate awareness/understanding of equal opportunities and other people’s behavioural, physical, social and welfare needs.

7. Collate existing material already gathered on lived experience work in the Mental Health area.

About you

We are looking for someone who firstly has a passion for ensuring that the voices of those with direct or lived experience of mental health issues are heard and included in our system-wide mental health strategic work.

We are seeking a person who works well as part of a team and has an ability to work constructively with colleagues, stakeholders, community groups, volunteers and members of the public. A leader and team worker who will listen and show respect for other’s opinions and feelings. They can respond empathetically in particularly challenging and emotive circumstances.

They should have knowledge of the mental health system and the range of health, social care and community sector services designed to meet the needs of people with mental health problems including programmes to promote good mental health and wellbeing.

They will understand how structural inequalities and discrimination impact on mental health, as well as have access to and experience of services and outcomes.

In addition, we are looking for someone with excellent communication skills who is engaging and credible with an enthusiasm for change.

They will be organised, analytical, with good management skills and the ability to exercise judgement in assessing complex information and practical problem-solving skills and an ability to produce clear and concise reports.
