About the role
Cambridgeshire County Council has ambitious plans for the future development of its transport network in order to tackle the climate emergency, clean up our air, support active and healthy lifestyles and facilitate improved economic opportunities and growth. The journey to Net Zero is a key objective of the Council and its partners and is embedded in corporate policy. An essential part of this is getting more people to walk, wheel and cycle more often, more safely for their journeys to school, work, leisure activities and shopping.
As a member of the new Active Travel Centre of Excellence you will be a point of contact both internally and externally for all things active travel related. You will work flexibly across council departments and with key partners such as Active Travel England, The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, and the district councils, focusing on identifying opportunities for improving facilities for, and promotion of, active travel. You will be part of a team proactively leading on the sharing of knowledge and best practice with all relevant stakeholders and ensuring that active travel is embedded in everything the Council does. Whilst our main office base is at New Shire Hall, the team also works flexibly across Council buildings or from home.
The attached Job Description and Person Specification provide more information.
Applications will be shortlisted against how you meet the person specification; please consider this when drafting your supporting statement.
Interviews are planned to take place in the week commencing 30th October at New Shire Hall Emery Crescent Enterprise Campus, Alconbury Weald, Huntingdon PE28 4YE. It would be useful if you could make a note in the supporting statement if you are not available for an interview then.
If you would like to speak to somebody about this role, please email Principal Active Travel Officers Susan Rooke (susan.rooke@cambridgeshire.gov.uk) or Clare Rankin (clare.rankin@cambridgeshire.gov.uk) to arrange this.
What will you be doing?
You will be helping to deliver the County’s Active Travel Strategy action plan which includes developing and delivering auditing processes for all transport schemes and new developments as well as developing active travel schemes from conception to design, ensuring that they comply with the latest guidance. You will also investigate and implement behavioural change initiatives and seek funding opportunities.
About you
You will have a good working knowledge of Active Travel policy and guidance as well as general knowledge of local and national transport policy and the roles and responsibilities of local authorities around planning and transport. You will be an enthusiastic advocate of active travel with excellent communication skills and experience of partnerships working with different organisations both statutory and voluntary. You will have a diplomatic understanding of political sensitivities and experience of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and you will be able to look at complex issues with critical and innovative thinking.
