About the role
Do you enjoy turning complex data into something people can understand and use? Are you looking for a role where your analysis can help shape services and support better decisions?
We’re looking for a Data Analyst to join our Data Services team, providing high-quality analysis, reporting and data visualisation across the organisation. You’ll work collaboratively with colleagues from different services, helping them get more from their data and turning information into clear, meaningful insight.
It’s a great opportunity to work across a varied range of data and technology. You’ll contribute to the development of our modern data platform, support our use of Power BI and work with colleagues to introduce new data solutions and technologies. You’ll also support important areas of work such as the Supporting Families programme.
You’ll be joining a team where you can continue developing your technical skills while seeing the practical impact that good data and insight can have across our services.
This is a hybrid role and appointment will be subject to the outcome of a Standard Disclosure obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
For more information or to chat about this opportunity please contact Chris Stromberg
What will you be doing?
No two pieces of analysis are exactly the same. You could be working with colleagues to understand what they need from their data, preparing and cleansing information, creating a data model or developing a Power BI report that turns a complex set of information into a clear story.
You’ll analyse research data and bring findings together, helping colleagues understand what the information is telling them. You’ll use different approaches to visualisation to communicate those findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
A key part of the role will be helping us make sure our data can be trusted. You’ll contribute to data governance, quality assurance, validation and data linkage, as well as supporting the collection, preparation and cleansing of data.
You’ll also contribute to the development and implementation of Power BI across the organisation and work alongside other data professionals developing our modern data platform. Depending on the work, you could use technologies including SQL, T-SQL or PL/SQL, Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server Integration Services.
Alongside your day-to-day analysis, you’ll contribute to Data Services projects and help integrate new data solutions and technologies. This gives you the opportunity to build your technical knowledge while working on projects with a clear organisational impact.
About you
You don’t need to know every technology we use. We’re looking for someone with a strong understanding of working with data and demonstrable knowledge of one or more of the technical areas relevant to the role, such as Power BI, SQL/T-SQL/PL/SQL, Azure Synapse Analytics, SQL Server Reporting Services or SQL Server Integration Services.
You’ll enjoy solving problems and be curious about what sits behind the numbers. Just as importantly, you’ll be able to take what you find and communicate it clearly. You’ll be comfortable working with technical colleagues as well as people who may have little experience of working with data.
You’ll be able to manage competing demands, take responsibility for your work and use your own initiative. We’re also looking for someone who wants to keep learning and developing their experience in new technical areas.
An understanding of data security, data protection and confidentiality is essential. Experience of working on small to medium-sized projects is also required, while previous experience of an IT environment, local government data, Early Help or Supporting Families would be useful.
You’ll need two A levels, an HNC, HND, NVQ Level 4 or equivalent. A degree or equivalent professional qualification and relevant technical certification are desirable rather than essential.
Above all, we’re looking for someone who is interested in data, keen to develop and wants to use their skills to help people make better-informed decisions.
For a full list of the requirements of the role, please check out the Job Description & Person Specification. This final signpost is specifically recommended in the Council’s recruitment guidance.
